How Myopia Management Helps Kids Get Ready for the New School Year

As a new school year approaches, parents are busy checking off supplies, schedules, and other essentials. An eye exam deserves a place on that list, especially for children with myopia. Myopia, or nearsightedness, can make it difficult to see the board, presentations, sports activities, and other objects at a distance. Because myopia often progresses during childhood, starting the school year with an updated vision assessment can help children see clearly while also protecting their long-term eye health.

At Texas State Optical Rayford, we offer personalized myopia management to help children maintain clearer vision and slow the progression of nearsightedness.

Why Myopia Can Affect the School Day

Clear distance vision is important throughout the classroom. A child with uncorrected or changing myopia may struggle to read information across the room, recognize details during activities, or transition comfortably between near and distance tasks.

Children do not always realize their vision has changed. Parents may notice signs such as:

•          Squinting to see the board or television

•          Sitting closer to screens

•          Complaining about blurry distance vision

•          Frequent headaches or eye fatigue

•          Holding objects closer than usual

•          A glasses prescription that continues to increase

A pediatric eye exam can identify changes that may not be obvious during everyday activities.

Myopia Management Goes Beyond Clearer Glasses

Traditional glasses and contact lenses correct blurry vision, but myopia management has an additional goal - slowing how quickly nearsightedness progresses.

As myopia increases, the eye typically grows longer. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased lifetime risk of certain eye conditions, including retinal problems and glaucoma. Managing progression while the eyes are still developing can help reduce the likelihood of reaching higher levels of myopia.

Myopia Management Options for Children

There is no single approach that is right for every child. At Texas State Optical Rayford, we can evaluate your child's prescription, eye health, age, lifestyle, and rate of myopia progression before recommending treatment.

Options may include MiSight 1 day contact lenses, which are daily disposable soft lenses designed to correct vision while helping slow myopia progression. Ortho-K is another option that uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea, providing clearer daytime vision without glasses or daytime contacts while also helping manage myopia progression.

Low-dose atropine eye drops may also be recommended for some children to help slow excessive eye growth associated with myopia. Depending on your child's needs, atropine may be used as part of an individualized treatment plan.

Start the School Year With a Myopia Evaluation

Back-to-school season is a practical time to check whether your child's vision has changed and determine if myopia management should be considered. Regular follow-up visits also allow us to track prescription changes and adjust treatment as your child's eyes grow.

Schedule a myopia evaluation with Texas State Optical Rayford to give your child clearer vision for the classroom and a proactive plan for the years ahead. Contact our office in Spring, TX, by calling (346) 660-4172 today.
